FCCLA Members Win Big at National Competition
The NS Times - 2014
Over Jul. 5-11 this past summer, three Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) club members attended the national FCCLA competition in San Antonio, Texas.
Both FCCLA adviser Auralee Brooks and senior Alesha Hurst, Utah FCCLA Vice President of Public Relations, mentioned what a big deal the national competition is, as a student must place either first or second in their category at the state level in order to go.

Hurst and junior Kinzie Durrant both competed in the national competition. Durrant competed in Nutrition and Wellness and received a silver medal, and Hurst competed for Environmental Ambassador and was awarded a gold medal.
In addition to competing, Hurst attended a series of workshops geared to train state officers as a part of a year-long program called Leadership Academy.
The group was also able to tour the area and visit several places, including the Alamo, as part of their trip.

NSHS Student Attends Leadership Training
The Pyramid - 2013
Reston, VA - Alesha Hurst, a junior at North Sanpete High School, recently returned from the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America's (FCCLA) Capitol Leadership conference, held in Washington, D.C.
Hurst is a member of North Sanpete FCCLA, serves as the Utah FCCLA Vice President of History, and had the opportunity to participate in the Expert Advocate concentration of the FCCLA Leadership Academy.
The powerful leadership development program focuses on networking, professionalism, public relations, strategic planning, advocacy, and more. Capitol Leadership attendees also had the opportunity to participate in a service-learning project.
In addition, all participants of Capitol Leadership visited their Congressional representatives to discuss the importance of funding Career and Technical Education through the Carl D. Perkins Act to support areas such as nutrition education in schools. Hurst went to Capitol Hill and met with Senator Orrin Hatch, staff members for Senator Mike Lee, and Representative Chris Stewart.
Hurst said of her experience, "I had the time of my life at Capitol Leadership! I came to understand more fully how the United States government works, and I gained leadership skills along the way! It was an amazing experience to meet with a few of Utah's congressmen. I got to see how hard it is to be in Congress, especially during the shut-down. I have a new appreciation for what our leaders do for us. It's great that an organization meant for middle- and high-school students gives opportunities to learn about important things that will ultimately make for better leaders of America."
The Ultimate Leadership Experience is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and young women become leaders and address important personal, family, work, and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education.
FCCLA has 200,000 members and more than 6,000 chapters from 50 state associations and the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The organization has involved more than 10 million youth since its founding in 1945.
FCCLA is unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by members. It is the only career and technical in-school student organization with the family as its central focus.
Participation in national programs and chapter activities helps members become strong leaders in their families, careers, and communities.
